Devil in a Woodpile

Devil in a Woodpile

Devil in a Woodpile (3:30 p.m.) – has been playing acoustic blues and ragtime in Chicago for the last 10 years. Get ready to tap your toes, move your feet, and laugh your dramas away. Devil in a Woodpile breathes new, booty-shaking high spirit into the string band, jug band, jump blues music, and hokum jazz that bequeathed its sass and energy to rock ‘n’ roll.

Rick Sherry and Tom Ray started playing together in the early 90s as members of the Jake LaBotz trio. When Jake left town, Rick and Tom played with Delta blues legend David “Honeyboy” Edwards, then formed a new trio with Paul K. As word about the band spread, Bloodshot Records signed them and launched Devil in a Woodpile onto the alt-country highway. The trio now includes Rick Cookin’ Sherry who sings, plays harmonica, washboard, and clarinet, and blows the jug; Tom Ray who plays bass; and Joel Paterson who plays guitar. Over the years each of them has also played with other performers.

Every Tuesday Devil in a Woodpile rocks the Hideout in Chicago transforming the indie music venue into a modern-day barrelhouse. In 2007 as part of the Old Town School of Folk Music 50th Anniversary, they performed in a tribute to Big Bill Broonzy and brought the house down.
