A difficult-to-categorize performer who has found a home in the modern acoustic genre, Greg Greenway is a multifaceted musical gem with a rare combination of instrumental expertise, soulfully moving vocals, powerful lyrics, and sparkling energy. Musically he draws inspiration from all over the map—gospel, rock, blues, jazz, and world music—but his center is in the singer/songwriter tradition that traces its roots all the way back to the social awareness of Woody Guthrie.
Originally from Richmond, Virginia, Greenway moved to Boston for its rich folk music tradition and has become one of its most unique and superlative emissaries. He has performed at Carnegie Hall, “Mountain Stage,” the Clearwater Festival, and many Phil Ochs' song nights, as well as a show at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honoring Phil Ochs. He was featured on National Public Radio's “All Things Considered Weekend” and was #12 on WUMB/Boston's list of top artists in the past 20 years. He teaches workshops on songwriting, performance, and guitar, as well as a class entitled “Music and Social Change.”
Greg Greenway will perform on “Folkstage” on Saturday night, July 17, Festival eve, at 8 p.m. on WFMT/98.7.
