Magpie (1:15 p.m. Main Stage, 3:00 p.m. Kids Area) is celebrating 35 years as a duo. Terry Leonino and Greg Artzner present a musical rainbow of traditional, country, swing, blues, and contemporary folk. Featured in a recent issue of Sing Out! magazine, Terry and Greg have played at folk festivals and concert stages throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico, England, Scotland, and Italy.
Terry Leonino is a gifted singer of jazz and blues in the tradition of Connie Boswell and Billie Holiday, but is equally comfortable with the subtle beauty of traditional folk and contemporary songs. Add to this her uncanny ability to find the perfect harmony line, and, in a powerful blend of their two voices, you have a real treat for the ear. Terry also plays harmonica, mandolin, fretted dulcimer, and rhythm guitar.
Greg Artzner is an outstanding guitarist whose fingerstyle approach owes a lot to his heroes, guitar legends such as Reverend Gary Davis, Big Bill Broonzy, Nick Lucas, Phil Ochs, and Rolly Brown,. He can provide a hard-driving rhythm or a ringing lyrical beauty. From a slow Scots air or a plaintive ballad to a rollicking ragtime blues or infectious swing, Greg covers it all. His high baritone voice has equal range allowing him to go from growling blues to a Chilean lament to a sweet croon.
Terry and Greg began to play music together in Kent, Ohio, in September of 1973, while Terry was in her senior year at Kent State University; in 1970 she had witnessed the May 4th shootings at Kent State. Greg began playing music in the early 1960s as a direct result of the Civil Rights Movement. Terry and Greg continue to reflect these experiences in their own work as they frequently raise their voices in support of the ongoing struggles for civil rights, freedom, justice, peace, and the environment. For many years they were based in the Washington, D.C. area, but now make their home in the northern Catskills. They are well-known as regular performers at Phil Ochs Song Nights, organized by Phil’s sister, Sonny Ochs, since 1984. They have received numerous awards including the “Wammie” from the Washington Area Music Association for Traditional Duo of the Year in 1998. Their 11th Magpie CD is In This World: Looking Back, Moving Forward. They have performed and recorded with former WFF performers Kim and Reggie Harris.
Terry and Greg have also produced programs of music for museums, including the Smithsonian. They have many years of experience working in schools and performing for children and families.
And Rich Warren always plays their cover of the Phil Ochs song “When I'm Gone” to end “The Midnight Special” on WFMT/98.7FM.
Pete Seeger said of them, “Greg and Terry can show us all what a wonderful thing it can be for two voices to harmonize together. How lucky I am to have lived to see and hear more links in the chain.”
Magpie will perform on the Main Stage and in the Kids Area.
