Martine Locke

Martine Locke

Martine Locke (1:15 p.m.) – divides her time between the United States and Australia, has toured with Ani DiFranco and rocked the stage with The Cowboy Junkies, Arlo Guthrie, and Luka Bloom. In the acoustic music scene her songs reach well outside typical structures with a more independent, passionate perspective. Her music is "so powerful that it demands attention." And while she has been compared to DiFranco, she also shares vocal qualities with Melissa Etheridge and the Indigo Girls. Musically she travels far in the folk-rock world. Some tunes will remind you of Counting Crows and others will bring in that Alanis Morissette association, with a sting of Carol King sneaking in here and there. She also applies do-it-yourself ethics with all the work she churns out.

In 1996 Martine started a highly respected acoustic duo called The Velvet Janes. They released four albums on Martine’s record label, Passionfruit Produce Records, which have sold more than 80,000 copies to date. They toured the world, won song writing competitions around Australia and the U.S., and continue to play in Australia every year to appreciative audiences around the country.

In 2001, after touring exclusively with The Velvet Janes for eight years, Martine also started touring the U.S. and Australia as a solo artist. 2003 brought the release of her debut CD, FLY. Performing at festivals such as: Willamette Valley Folk Festival, Iowa Women's Music Festival, Portland Pride, Midwest Women's Autumnfest and Bethlehem Musikfest, Port Fairy Folk Festival and Michigan Women's Music Festival with The Velvet Janes. 2005 saw the release of Martine's recording, On The Verge, showcasing ten new original songs. And in 2008 she released Undone, a mixture of surging melodies, hard rocking riffs, and sweet gems.

Despite all the touring, the release of multiple solo and band albums, playing well over 150 shows a year including music festivals, colleges, clubs, pride festivals and living rooms, Martine Locke maintains a sense of fun, passion, and independence... and her decidedly wicked Australian sense of humor all along the way.
